Mosheen heads Randwick Guineas Nominations

Australian Guineas champion Mosheen is the headline act in a quality list of 23 horses nominated for the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), which will take place at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday.

The Robert Smerdon trained filly will be looking to add another win to an impressive resume that already includes two Group 1 victories.

Regular jockey Danny Nikolic rode the Fastnet Rock filly in a work out at Flemington yesterday and was pleased ahead of her first race at the famous Sydney track.

“She worked good this morning,” Nikolic said.

“She’s held her form really good and I’m happy with her.”

Mosheen showed her quality in a terrific win from the outside barrier in the Australian Guineas but it will be no easy race on Saturday with the likes of Manawanui and Hobartville Stakes winner Wild and Proud also included in nominations.

Manawanui will be ridden by Tommy Berry in the absence of regular jockey Glyn Schofield who was suspended following his ride on the horse in the Hobartville Stakes.

In that race, Manawanui crossed the line in front of Wild and Proud but was relegated to second following a protest from the Wild and Proud camp.

Berry is confident the Ron Leemon trained horse can take top honours in the $500,000 race on Saturday.

“I’m confident he’ll win,” he said.

“You’ve got to kind of show that confidence heading into a Group 1 race. I think he’s going to be the best horse in the race and depending on the draw, hopefully he gets the best run.”

Other quality horses included in the Randwick Guineas nominations are Australian Guineas runner up Strike the Stars and third-place Hobartville runner Moment of Change.

Peter Moody trained Moment of Change has had just four starts but has already recorded two victories.

The Randwick Guineas is the feature race at Royal Randwick this Saturday in what is the first meeting at the track since redevelopment works began last November.
