Glamour mare Mosheen got her campaign back on track at Flemington today with a much needed win in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m).

The multiple Group 1 winner had a throat operation prior to the spring and struggled in her first two starts but stalked the leaders before finishing strongly to claim a one-length win today.

Held just off the lead on the fence by Nick Hall, the Fastnet Rock mare travelled comfortably before being being let loose at the top of the straight.

It took Mosheen a while to wind up but she showed the class that made her an autumn star to kick clear in a run that suggested there is plenty of improvement to come.

Trainer Robert Smerdon expressed relief following the race and confirmed her campaign would be geared towards the Group 1 Myer Classic in November.

“I was a bit anxious as they were going to the gates,” Smerdon said.

“At home we’d thought she’d progressed…but in the back of you mind she’s been pretty plain in her first couple.

“She’s still got improvement to come and we’d like to think she can be here at her peak in four weeks time for the Myer.”

Nick Hall, who has been appointed to ride Mosheen this spring in the absence of Danny Nikolic, was pleased to see Mosheen back to her winning ways and suggested there is plenty of room for improvement.

“It was a bit of a d-day and it’s good to see her back in winning form,” Hall said.

“She definitely peaked on her run. She’s got improvement there which is good to see and there’s definitely no problem with her throat.”

Pat Hyland-trained mare Bonaria took runner-up honours while Miss Stellablle was tough to hang on for third after doing a lot of work early in the race.
