If glamour mare More Joyous is to take her current winning streak to seven in Saturday week’s Toorak Handicap (1600m) she will have to break history.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter revealed on Radio Sports National this morning that the winner of more than $4.4 million in prizemoney is likely to carry 60kg, an impost that has not been carried to victory in the last 30 years.

“If she was to get 59.5 or 60kg, in the last 30 years no horse has run in the Toorak with more than 58.5kg,” Carpenter said.

“There’s only, I think, been five horses in the 120-year history of the race that won with 59 or 60kg.”

That would mean the daughter of More Than Ready would be giving Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Moment Of Change a weight advantage of around 6.5kg.

“If she gets 60kg, a horse like Moment Of Change would get about 53.5kg,” Carpenter said.

“It’s going to be a big weight whatever she is allocated and it will mean horses like Moment Of Change, in the old terms, will get almost a stone (6.35kg) in weight off her.”

More Joyous carried 58kg to victory in the Toorak in 2010 but is now a far more accomplished horse.

Since her half-length win over We’re Gonna Rock she has won 11 races including five at Group 1 level.

The eight-time Group 1 winner has picked up where she left off in the autumn with comfortable victories in both the Listed Sheraco Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m).

If More Joyous carries 60kg to victory in the Toorak she would match the feat of Tobin Bronze who carried the male equivalent of 62kg in 1967.

Tobin Bronze also went on to win the Cox Plate that year, the race Gai Waterhouse is aiming the star mare towards.
