Peter Moody will try his luck in running his mare Elumino in the Heather Heron Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Elumino was sent to stud to be a broodmare last July but failed to get in foal.

The five-year-old mare will take part in her first race in almost a year tomorrow after being retired due to a variety of joint and knee injuries.

“She went to stud but didn’t get in foal,” Moody said.

“We retired her as she had a lot of wear and tear in the joints and knees and we thought she’d genuinely come to the end of it.”

Despite the setback, Moody is confident that Elumino is back to her best form.

“We’ve brought her back and it’s the soundest she’s been in two years,” Moody said.

“She has had a long time off but she has done a lot of work with Peter Clark at Murchison and she’s been at Caulfield for the last five weeks.

“Her trials and work have been super. She’s getting around like a spring three-year-old.”

Moody believes that his mare shouldn’t be discounted, despite the long period in between runs.

“Common sense tells you that she should need the run but she’s going well and will run a cheeky race,” Moody said.
