Mongolian Khan remains a dominate favourite in 2015 Caulfield Cup betting markets and trainer Murray Baker is confident that his star stayer will have no issues handling the quick back-up in the Group 1 event at Caulfield on Saturday.
Mongolian Khan was backed into 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $4.80 following his fast-finishing third in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield last Saturday and he got into as short as $4.20 before he drifted back out to $4.60 overnight.
The Holy Roman Emperor entire has never previously had two race starts within a seven day period, but Baker told RSN this morning that Mongolian Khan gives him every indication that he will handle the back-up without any issues and he is confident that the four-year-old will relish the step back-up in trip to 2400 metres.
“I think that he is ok on the back-up,” Baker said.
“He is a good, tough colt and he bounced through it, so there were no worries there.
“I thought it was a good run, he was unlucky, but that is what happy in these big races because they are all good horses.
“He certainly runs 2400 this guy.
“He has won two Derbies, so I think that it suits him better than 2000.”
Mongolian Khan was one of the big winners of the 2015 Caulfield Cup barrier draw that was held earlier in the week and he is set to jump from barrier six if emergencies Quest For More, Dibayani and Magic Hurricane are all removed from the Caulfield Cup field.
Baker believes that jockey Opie Bosson will have plenty of options on Mongolian Khan in the early stages of the Caulfield Cup and Baker is confident that the leading New Zealand hoop will be able to get the job done in the $3.15 million race.
“He has a good in-form jockey,” Baker said.
“He is our best jockey over there and he won a Group 3 last night for Danny O’Brien.
“He is on song.”
Godolphin stayer Hauraki is currently on the second line of betting at a quote of $9, while Set Square is the only other horse that is available at single figure Caulfield Cup odds of $9.50.
There has been a sprinkling of support for Protectionist ($51 into $41), Fame Game ($11 into $10), Quest For More ($61 into $51) and Complacent ($15 into $13), while Royal Descent ($18 out to $21) and Set Square ($9.50 out to $9).
