Kingfisher was priced at $34 when the 2015 Melbourne Cup field was released yesterday afternoon, but his odds shortened into $31 following the completion of the barrier draw and he was placed into $26 this morning.

The Galileo entire was set for the Melbourne Cup at the start of the year and he stamped himself as a genuine winning chance when he took out the Listed Saval Beg Stakes (2816m) at Leopardstown on June 5 and he finished second behind Trip To Paris in the Group 1 Gold Cup (4023m) at Royal Ascot on June 18, but he was slightly disappointing in the Group 3 Irish St Leger Trial Stakes (2816m) at Curragh on August 23 and the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) at the same venue on September 13.

Kingfisher took a while to settle into his new environment at the 2015 Werribee International Equine Centre, but he has impressed onlookers with his track work in the last week and part-owner Nick Williams believes that the tough stayer can be in the finish of the 2015 Melbourne Cup if he is able to produce his best form.

“He has done a bit more work than Bondi Beach this week because he was a little behind because he didn’t travel the best,” Williams said.

“In the last two weeks he has really come into himself and he is flying.

“He is the horse that Aidan set for this race in May and his whole summer campaign was geared around coming here at this time of year.

“If he finds his best form he will be in the finish for sure.”

The Macedon Lodge team of Lloyd Williams have had a great deal of success with imported stayers in the Melbourne Cup, but they have partnered with the Coolmore team to give them two extra runners in the $6 million event in 2015.

Nick Williams revealed that the team were offered a part-share in Kingfisher, Bondi Beach and Order Of St George earlier in the year and he said that his family were delighted to be able to partner with Coolmore in Australia’s biggest race.

“We are very close friends as a family with the Magnier family and they were kind enough to offer us some shares in those horses earlier in the year,” Williams said.

“It has given us the opportunity to have those horses over there in training with Aidan O’Brien, who is obviously the best trainer in the world and the private trainer for the Coolmore operation, and it is a great honour for them to allow us to partner with them in a couple of horses to bring out here for this great race.”

Kingfisher is currently available at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $26 with Ladbrokes, while Fame Game ($4) remains a dominant favourite from Trip To Paris ($9), Preferment ($10), Max Dynamite ($14), Criterion ($14), Almoonqith ($16), The United States ($19), Our Ivanhowe ($21) and Bondi Beach ($21).
