Gundy Spirit has been backed into 2015 Eye Liner Stakes odds of $10 and has been a clear market mover in betting markets for the Listed event that will be held at Ipswich tomorrow.

Gundy Spirit started his winter campaign with a credible fifth in the Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on March 28 and he returned to winning form with a victory over Neo in the Garrards Handicap (1350m) at the same venue on April 11.

The Jet Spur gelding finished an impressive third in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on April 25 and he only just missed the placings in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben on May 9, but he failed fire when he finished more than 10 lengths behind Strawberry Boy in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Doomben on May 23.

Trainer Tony Gollan told Racing Queensland that Gundy Spirit did not handle the step-up to the mile or weight-for-age level in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and he is confident that the four-year-old will produce a much improved performance in the Eye Liner Stakes this weekend.

“Gundy Spirit went out to the mile at weight-for-age last start and I suggest put a line through that run,” Gollan said.

“He’s won a couple of times around Ipswich and this is the right type of race for him.”

While Gundy Spirit has been the best-backed runner in Eye Liner Stakes betting markets, Group 1 winner Smokin’ Joey remains a narrow favourite at a quote of $4.20 in what will be the easiest race he has contested for over a year.

Smokin’ Joey took out the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield on February 14 and he finished second behind Suavito in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at the same venue on February 28 before he was slight disappointing in both the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 14 and the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on June 6, but he finished a credible eighth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Nite Rocker is currently on the second line of betting at 2015 Eye Liner Stakes odds of $4.60, while promising three-year-old Ulmann ($5.50) and Glasshouse Handicap winner Riva De Lago are the only other runners available at a single figure quote.
