Missy Longstocking Silences Critics at Doomben

The knockers came for Missy Longstocking following her tired Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) win at Eagle Farm two weeks ago but they were quickly put in their place at Doomben today as the Queensland filly took her unbeaten streak to four in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m).

Many questioned the Liam Birchley-trained filly’s ability to run a strong 1200m but she put an end to those doubts when hitting the line strongly to defeat Sweet Idea and Architect on her march towards the Magic Millions Classic.

After jumping well from barrier seven, experienced rider Damian Browne elected to tuck the exciting juvenile away midfield and she settled comfortably as Sweet Idea set a solid tempo up front.

When the opening came at the top of the straight, Missy Longstocking duly responded when called upon by Browne and produced an excellent finish to defeat the bold Sweet Idea by a half-length.

The daughter of Sequalo was at $21 in the Magic Millions market before today’s triumph but will shorten considerably after proving her credentials over 1200m.

Sweet Idea is also expected to firm in betting for the $2 million two-year-old feature after easily adapting to conditions in Queensland.

The Snitzel filly is set to form part of a strong Gai Waterhouse-trained brigade at the Gold Coast next month and now boasts a promising record of a win and two runner-up performances from three starts.

Favourite Sir Luminar was forced to work hard early from a wide barrier and could not match it with those who had softer runs despite being on level terms entering the straight.
