Last Saturday’s Doomben winner Miss Gunpowder still has more improvement in her as she prepares for the Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) at Doomben on June 24.

Miss Gunpowder is on the way to repaying the $700,000 that her new owners, headed by Werret Bloodstock, paid for her at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sales at the end of May when she collected a $64,000 winner’s cheque after holding on to beat Too Good To Refuse in the Listed $100,000 Makers Mark Hinkler Handicap (1200m) at Doomben last Saturday.
Craig Williams was at his best to scrap home on Miss Gunpowder whom co-trainer Tom Dabernig thinks has further improvement heading towards the Tattersall’s Tiara for the fillies and mares, the last Group 1 of the Australian racing season.
“I’m sure there’s a lot of improvement to come and if she pulls up well she’ll go on to the Tatt’s Tiara,” Dabernig told Racing Queensland News.
“She’s already won over 1400 metres so the distance won’t be an issue.”
The Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day is the last of the three Winter Carnival Group 1 Days that were transferred to Doomben after the Eagle Farm track was rated as substandard following the Kingsford-Smith Cup Race Day when it raced well below what was expected for a major Carnival Race Day.
The transfer of venues then forced the distance of the Tattersall’s Tiara to be reduced from it’s original distance of 1400m to 1350m for this year’s running.
The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig retained Miss Gunpowder following her transfer of ownership and the mare was able to win her second race for the stable from four starts after being previous prepared by leading Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes.
Miss Gunpowder’s overall record is six wins plus five minor placings from sixteen starts with her best win being in the 2015 Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield.
In early betting for the Tattersall’s Tiara at Ladbrokes.com.au, Miss Gunpowder is rated as one of the top chances at $8 behind Stradbroke Handicap runner up In Her Time at $3.20 and Eckstein and Prompt Response who are both on the second line of betting at $7.
