Trainer Les Ross will push on to try to gain a start in the Golden Slipper with Mishani Honcho after the gelding pleased the stable with a solid third in the Group 2 $250,000 Blackwoods Uvex Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

The Queensland trained two year old came from last on the corner in the small seven horse field to run home for an eye catching third behind Headwater and Voilier and Ross was pleased with his way he found the line.

“I was happy enough with the run and he was one of the few horses all day to make up ground and hit the line strongly,” Ross told Racing Queensland News.

“They weren’t making ground on the leaders all day.”

Mishani Honcho will have to win his next start in the Group 2 $300,000 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 7 to warrant connections paying the $150,000 late entry fee to gain a place in the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill a fortnight later.

“He’ll be a lot better over 1200 metres so he’ll go to the Todman Stakes next,” Ross said.

“He’ll need to win the Todman to warrant running in the Golden Slipper, otherwise he’ll go for the Sires Produce.”

Mishani Honcho wasn’t among the original nominations for the Golden Slipper and Ross has always planned to run in the Group 1 $1m ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 4.

The Jet Spur youngster has accumulated $288,500 in eligible prizemoney plus $68,000 in bonuses from four wins and three placings from eight starts and would have been second in the order of entry for the Golden Slipper if he was an early nomination.

A win in the Group 3 $150,000 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at the Gold Coast on December 27 boosted Mishani Honcho’s prizemoney significantly as did his win in the $150,000 Coastline BMW Racing Minister’s 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast on January 17.

Headwater with $199,700 in prizemoney, jumped to the top of the Golden Slipper order of entry and is exempt from the ballot for winning the Silver Slipper Stakes while the Robert Smerdon trained fillies Fontiton ($211,750) and Thurlow ($190,250) are second and third in the order of entry.

The Team Hawkes trained Headwater also heads the market order for the Golden Slipper with Ladbrokes.com.au listing the Exceed And Excel colt as the $4.60 favourite ahead of the Gai Waterhouse trained Vancouver at $6, Fontiton at $8 and Haptic at $13.
