Brilliant colt Menari will have to overcome a wide barrier draw if he is to win the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Gerald Ryan trained Menari was quoted as the short priced favourite for the Golden Rose before drawing barrier eleven in the fourteen horse field at final acceptance time this morning and has retained his spot at the top of the market order at $1.95 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Menari has been outstanding in his two wins this campaign with a first up victory in the Listed $150,000 Smithfield RSL Club Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill on August 12 followed by a dominant performance in the Group 2 $200,000 The Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill on September 9.

Josh Parr has been on board the Snitzel colt for his two recent wins and gets the mount again in the Golden Rose while Tye Angland will ride the stablemate Trapeze Artist who came up with the extreme outside barrier.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Pariah chased home Menari in the Run To The Rose and was also out of luck at the barrier draw, coming up with gate twelve with regular rider Blake Shinn sticking with him.

Pariah was a brilliant first up winner in the Group 3 $150,000 TPG Telecom San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 26 but couldn’t match strides with Menari in The Run To The Rose.

Team Snowden will saddle up three runners in the Golden Rose, and as well as Pariah, have Dracarys and Assimilate who had mixed results at the barrier draw.

Hugh Bowman’s mount Assimilate also drew out wide at barrier nine while Dracarys with Tim Clark to ride, drew the pole position.

Dracarys retruned from a spell a winner in the Group 3 $150,000 Up and Coming Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on August 19 while Assimilate was shade unlucky when he flew home from well back in the field to be beaten a nose when runner up in the Group 3 $150,000 Monaco Cup – Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Rosehill on August 26.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will saddle up the in-form filly Formality who was also out of favour at the barrier drew and will jump from gate thirteen with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

Ciaron Maher’s unbeaten colt Merchant Navy will get a sweet run from barrier two with Mark Zahra taking the ride again.

Early betting for the 2017 Golden Rose at Ladbrokes.com.au: $1.95 Menari, $6.50 Pariah, $8 Gold Standard, $10 Merchant Navy, $15 Chauffeur, Assimilate, $21 Dracarys, Shogun Sun, Formality, Champagne Cuddles, $34 Trapeze Artist, $67 The Mission, Perast, $101 Diamond Tathagata.
