Hall Of Fame jockey and Melbourne Cup winner Mick Dittman tips that the Ed Dunlop trained Trip To Paris will be taking the winning trophy for the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) back to Europe again this year.

Last year’s winner Protectionist was successful for German trainer Andreas Wohler while the French scored back to back Melbourne Cup wins with Americain and Dunaden in 2010 and 2011.

Dittman, a winner of eighty-eight Group 1 races and who rode Gurner’s Lane to defeat the mighty Kingston Town in the 1982 Melbourne Cup, says that Trip To Paris is the horse to beat after running a terrific Melbourne Cup trial when second to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

“I hate to say it, but it appears the Melbourne Cup will again be heading overseas,” Dittman told the Racingbase.

“The barrier draw only enhanced my belief that English raider Trip To Paris is the horse to beat on Tuesday.

“From a Melbourne Cup point of view, his Caulfield Cup run was one of the best.”

Tommy Berry had his first ride on Trip To Paris in the Caulfield Cup and Dittman is tipping that the top Sydney jockey will give the $8 second favourite every chance from barrier fourteen.

“There is no doubt Trip To Paris will be better suited stepping up to the 3200m, jockey Tommy Berry has had a feel of the horse and will have better knowledge of the five-year-old’s racing style,” Dittman said.

“They say you have to lose a grand final before you can win one and trainer Ed Dunlop, who prepares Trip To Paris, is well versed in that. He also has Red Cadeaux in the race, who has finished second in the Cup three times, so the British trainer is overdue.”

Dunlop is determined to win the Melbourne Cup after his grand stayer Red Cadeaux visited the runner’s up stall in the 2011, 2013 and 2014 and the big red chestnut is going around again in the at Flemington on Tuesday as a $26 chance.

Dittman is banking on champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller to fly the flag for the locals and he will saddle up Preferment ($9.50), Grand Marshall ($41) and Who Shot Thebarman ($21).

“Preferment looks very well placed,” Dittman said.

“He’s a Derby winner, he’s crying out for two miles and is beautifully weighted. Hugh Bowman is wasting hard to ride him at 53.5kgs so you can’t get a better combination than Waller and Bowman, going into a big race.”

Dittman also finds it hard to leave the Japanese stayer Fame Game ($4.40 favourite) out of his top selections after he ran an eye catching sixth in the Caulfield Cup.

“The dogs have been barking for Fame Game since his last to sixth run in the Caulfield Cup,” Dittman said.

“It really was a soft effort as he certainly wasn’t knocked around at Caulfield. Jockey Zac Purton was content to wait for the splits to come, but when they didn’t, he didn’t appear too concerned.

“Sometimes runs like that, when horses don’t get a lot of luck in the straight, can bring them on a lot. All going well there will be natural improvement condition-wise for Fame Game. There is no doubt the favourite will be hard to beat, but I don’t believe he is entitled to be as short as he is.”

Dittman has rated the Robert Hickmott lightweight The United States as one of the best roughies in the race at $20.

The United States stormed into Melbourne Cup calculations with a very impressive win in the Group 2 $250,000 Melbourne Signage Concepts Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

“The Moonee Valley Cup is not usually a great guide to the Melbourne Cup, but The United States was very impressive in his Valley win,” Dittman said.

“They went 100 miles an hour there, he was strong at the finish and looked like he could have run another lap, so at $20 he looks a real value chance.”
