Vigor has been retired from racing

Seven-year-old Vigor has been retired from racing today, despite being amongst the nominations for this year’s $6 million Melbourne Cup.

The decision was made to retired Vigor after he finished last by eleven lengths in a field of ten in the Listed Slickpix Stakes at Caulfield.

The O’Reily gelding is best known for his impressive spring carnival campaign in 2009 when he controversially missed out on a start in the Melbourne Cup field despite winning the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes and placing third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup.

Vigor won eight of his 28 career starts, but had been unsuccessful at claiming victory since 2009, despite placing in many quality Group races since.

The talented horse, who was purchased at the 2006 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale for $60,000, accumulated close to $1 million in prize money throughout his career.

Vigor was trained at Flemington by Danny O’Brien for the length of his five year-long career.
