Irish hurdler Max Dynamite had a sneaky preview of the Flemington circuit in his lead up to the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at the famous track next Tuesday.

The Williams Mullins trained Max Dynamite has mixed flat racing with jumps racing over the last twelve months but has emerged as one of the top fancies for the Melbourne Cup following his win in the Group 2 £160,000 Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup (2 mile, 88 yards) at York, in England, on August 21.

Max Dynamite’s runaway four and a half lengths win left seven horses in his wake, including Caulfield Cup runner up Trip To Paris.

The Ed Dunlop trained Trip To Paris was most impressive in making up many lengths in the straight to be beaten half a length by Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17.

Former Irish jumps jockey David Casey has been in charge of the six year old’s Melbourne Cup preparation and said that Max Dynamite really came alive when he visited Flemington for an easy workout and a general look around the place on Tuesday morning.

“He’s been here a month now so it was just to give him a day away, get him in the horse box, get his blood up a bit and have a look at the track,” Casey told AAP.

“He did a bit of work on the track, a warm-up lap then had a canter around, quickening up the straight.

“It was just to get a feel of the place and he really came alive when he got there as he’s become a bit lazy here.”

Max Dynamite has been stationed at the quarantine centre at the Werribee International Horse Centre with the other International raiders and Casey said that it was great to have a trip  away from the day to day routine there.

The gelding’s trainer William Mullins made a trip out from Ireland a fortnight ago to assess the progress of his stayer and after watching him complete a strong hit out, was convinced he didn’t need a lead up run going into Australia’s greatest race.

“He’s a very clean-winded horse,” Casey said.

“We gave him a good blow when Willie came over and that just proved to us that he didn’t need a run as he was in very good order that day.

“We might do a bit stronger work on Thursday but we’ll keep to the routine with a few canters in between and keep him sound until race day.

“That’s the most important thing in the last week.”

Max Dynamite began his career in France before being transferred to Mullins’ Irish stable where he was tested over the jumps with one win from seven attempts, claiming victory at his first try over the obstacles in a two mile Maiden Hurdle at Thurles in Ireland in November 2014.

His latest outing over the jumps was two starts back when he ran second in €300,000 Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap at Galway on July 30 this year.

Max Dynamite’s latest win at York has seen him well in commission in the market order for the Melbourne Cup with Ladbrokes.com.au listing him as a $15 chance alongside of Herbert Power Stakes winner Amralah, Cox Plate runner up Criterion and last year’s Melbourne Cup third placegetter Who Shot Thebarman.
