Melbourne Cup 2015: Williams Enthusiastic About Bondi Beach

Lloyd Williams has three horses in the 2015 Melbourne Cup, but the colourful owner has labelled Bondi Beach as potentially the best stayer that he has ever owned.

Bondi Beach made his racing debut with a win at Leopardstown on May 10 and he was beaten in the Listed King George V Cup (2414m) at the same venue on June 5 before he returned to winning form in the Group 3 Curragh Cup (2816m) on June 28.

The Galileo colt finished a close second behind Storm The Stars in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes (2414m) at York on August 19 before he finished a close second again in a controversial edition of the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes (2937m) at Doncaster on September 12.

William’s Macedon Lodge team announced that they had purchased a share in Bondi Beach before he made the trip to Australia for the 2015 Melbourne Cup and Williams was absolutely brimming in praise for the horse on Racing Ahead this morning.

The four-time Melbourne Cup winning owner indicated that Bondi Beach may end up being the best stayer that he has ever owned, but he admits that does not guarantee he will be ready to win the 2015 edition of the Melbourne Cup.

“He is a very good horse,” Williams said.

“I think that Northern Hemisphere three-year-olds have a great chance in this race.

“They need to be high class, but I go back to Efficient’s Cup and look at Mahler.

“Mahler was probably a bit unlucky in that race and he probably could have finished a little bit closer to Efficient.

“Bondi Beach is probably a slightly better horse than Mahler and I think he is going to run well.

“Having your sixth start in this race is quite a task, but he is a very good horse and if he has some luck in running I think that you will get a good sight from him.

“He really looks well this horse, he has done well at Werribee and as you can probably gather I am very enthusiastic about his horse.

“Whether he can win a Melbourne Cup tomorrow is another story, but if he can stay on his feet he might be the best stayer that I have had.”

Bondi Beach is currently available at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $21, while The United States is the pick of the Williams trio at his current quote of $20.
