Max Dynamite comes to Australia on the back of a win in the Group 2 £160,000 Weatherby’s Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup (2 mile, 88 yards) at York, in England, on August 21 and left in his wake Melbourne Cup rivals Trip To Paris and Big Orange.

The Ed Dumlop trained Trip To Paris finished fifth behind Max Dynamite at York then came out and raan a slashing second to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17 and is currently the second favourite at $7.50 with Ladbrokes.com.au for the Melbourne Cup.

While Big Orange, who ran seventh in the Lonsdale Cup is one of the outsiders of the field at $61.

Max Dynamite, with champion European jockey Frankie Dettori to ride, is well in contention in Melbourne Cup betting at $11, firming in from $13 when the final field was released on Saturday afternoon.

“His flat form mixes in with the best of the Europeans so I don’t see why he couldn’t be the first European horse home. If that’s good enough to win that’ll do me,” Mullins told Racing and Sports.

“The type of the horse that Australians come to Europe to buy is exactly the same horses we’re buying.

“We always keep one eye on that. If they’re not good enough over jumps we come back to the flat and have a go at the Melbourne Cup.”

“This guy has got plenty of pace as he showed us in the Lonsdale Cup. Hopefully we can emulate what Vintage Crop did,” Mullins said on Cup eve.

The Dermot Weld trained Vintage Crop arrived from Ireland in 1993 with a reputation of be ing a good hurdler but blew the field away to score an historic Melbourne Cup win.

Max Dynamite has also had success over the jumps back in Ireland and Mullins is hoping his third runner in Australia’s most famous race can see him take the winning Melbourne Cup trophy back to Ireland.

Mullins has saddled up two Melbourne Cup runners to date with Holy Orders finishing seventeenth in 2003 and Simenon running fourth to Fiorente in 2013.

The other European trained horses in the Melbourne Cup are Bondi Beach ($21), Red Cadeaux ($31), Sky Hunter ($34), Kingfisher ($34), Snow Sky ($51), Quest For More ($81).
