Trainer Sam Kavanagh has revealed that the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 8 will be the major 2014 Spring Racing Carnivalfor the lightly-raced Interspersed.

Interspersed made her racing debut in a maiden at Hawkesbury in September last year and after starting her 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign with a win in a maiden at Newcastle, progressed quickly through the grades to win the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) on March 9 and finished a credible fifth behind Rising Romance in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.
The Sebring filly was sent to the spelling paddock straight after her run in the Australian Oaks and Kavanagh told Racing Ahead that he was thrilled by the physical improvement of the four-year-old ahead of her 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.
“She has come back really well,” Kavanagh said.
“She is a bit of a stretchy filly, she may come to Melbourne right away for something like the Let’s Elope Stakes and we will go through the mares races in the spring.
“Her main aim will probably be something like the Matriarch late in the spring.
“She has put on a lot of weight and she has had a big grow, so she has really looked like she has progressed into a four-year-old mare.”
Interspersed will take on a number of seasoned mares in races like the Matriarch Stakes and Kavanagh admits that she will need to improve to be competitive against the older horses during her spring preparation, but said that the black type winner had been well looked after during her racing career to date and still had plenty of scope in which to develop as an older horse.
“Obviously those four-year-old fillies have got to improve to take on the mares class in the spring, but she is only lightly raced and she seems like she has taken that natural step,” Kavanagh said.
“I am not one to hassle my horses too early; she only had one run in the spring as a three-year-old before she was very immature and needed time.
“She is a horse that is going to improve as a mare and we still have a couple of good seasons of racing with her.
“We are very excited about her.”
Kavanagh is still chasing a maiden win at Group level after winning Listed races with Bagman, Interspersed, Midsummer Sun and Absalon.
