Jockey Jason Maskiell is confident that race favourite The Cleaner will be too good for the rest of the Devonport Cup field this Wednesday.

The five-year-old has won both his previous race starts this campaign and will be looking to make it three in a row when he runs in the $100,000 race in two day’s time.

The Cleaner has won 11 of his 21 race starts thus far and has earned close to $200,000 in prize money.

“We are quite confident with him,” Maskiell said.

“We would be silly not to be confident with him. His form has been quite good and we’re looking forward to it.

“He gives me a good feel and hopefully he will live up to expectations which I think he will.”

The Cleaner’s first win this preparation came in the Listed Tasmainan Stakes, which he won by an incredible four lengths.

He then went on to win the $20,000 Field Family Handicap in convincing fashion last start.

“I think he has come back very strong this time in,” Maskiell said.

“He has been beating some of the better horses down here in Tassie and has been doing it quite well.”

While The Cleaner is currently the top weight for the Devonport Cup this Wednesday, Maskiell does not see that as much of an obstacle to claiming victory aboard the Savoire Vivre gelding.

“Weight will not be the issue, it will be whether they take him on up front,” he said.

“The only worry is probably Makes Cents drawn just inside us, who can miss the kick by a half length sometimes and ours jumps very well so hopefully we can cross him and get a comfortable lead.”

A total of 13 horses will line up to take on The Cleaner in the 1,880 metre Devonport Cup at Devenport Tapeta Synthetic Racecourse.
