Brisbane Cup contender Margins will get a further chance to showcase his staying ability this Saturday when he continues his rise through the grades in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) at Eagle Farm.

Trainer Ben Currie said he had been “waiting to get him up to a trip” and Margins backed up his trainer’s judgement when storming down the outside for a two-length win in the Listed Tails Stakes (2100m) last month.

So highly does Currie rate his charge that he nominated him for Saturday week’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.

But the emerging Toowoomba trainer is not sold on a start in the weight-for-age feature, suggesting he is more likely to keep Margins to handicap races this preparation.

“We’ll discuss the Doomben Cup acceptance tonight but it’s probably unlikely,” Currie said.

“Just at weight-for-age level at this stage he is not that well placed so we are probably better off keeping him to the handicaps.

“If he keeps progressing as he is we can certainly look at bigger races in the future.”

Firmly on the son of Parameter’s radar is the Group 2 $300,000 Brisbane Cup (2400m) which will take place at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Currie was thrilled with Margins’ last-start win and is looking forward to testing him in better company this weekend.

“We’ve just been waiting to get him up to that sort of trip,” he said.

“Being realistic he hasn’t beaten a lot yet but you can only beat what is in front of you and he’s fit and ready now.”

Prior to the Tails Stakes Margins was beaten a half-length by Transporter who has since run a close second to Caulfield Cup placegetter Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes.

“The run of Transporter on the weekend certainly gave us some confidence,” Currie said.

Potential Chairman’s Handicap rivals for Margins include in-form Victorian mare Lake Sententia and 2012 Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential.
