Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie admits promising stayer Margins is still yet to prove himself but says he wouldn’t “trade him for anything.”

The four-year-old will contest the Sky Racing Class 6 Plate at Doomben on Saturday but it would be fair to assume there are bigger things to come.

Margins gave an insight into his ability last June in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) when he finished runner-up by the narrowest of margins to Queensland Derby winner Brambles.

So highly is Brambles rated that trainer Peter Moody considered him a Caulfield Cup horse before injury intervened.

Margins has also had his fair share of injury problems, managing just five starts since the Rough Habit.

The son of Parameter showed he was back on track on April 1 when winning a 1500m Benchmark 85 by three lengths and Currie is excited by the prospect of a longer trip this weekend.

“We’ve been waiting to get him up to a mile for a while and been taking a patient approach,” Currie said.

“At this stage we think the further the better with him and he’ll probably go up to 2200m next time.”

With the injury problems the gelding has faced, Currie is cautious not to look too far into the future.

But the young trainer outlined races such as the Caloundra Cup and Ipswich Cup as achievable goals, with the Brisbane Cup a lofty target if he can continue to progress as he steps up in distance.

“Everyone wants to win big races and obviously being a Queensland trainer the Brisbane Cup is a big deal,” Currie said.

“But with all due respect to the opposition, in terms of carnival horses he hasn’t really beaten much so he’s still got to prove it.

“Certainly at this stage we wouldn’t want to trade him for anything but he’s got to go out there and do it.”
