Glyn Schofield could face  a troubling dilemma in the coming weeks, one of the country’s best riders is set to become a victim of his own success.

Schofield is the regular rider for two of Australia’s leading horses, Manawanui for Ron Leemon and Hay List for John McNair.

Both horses are returning ahead of promising autumn campaigns but unfortunately for Schofield they’ll be in different parts of the country.

With big race meets just about every week for the next few months it’s virtually inevitable that there will be a clash of programs at some point, in fact it could come as soon as their first up runs.

Schofield usually rides in Sydney and if he were to stay at home it would be for Manawanui in a likely first up run in the Royal Sovereign Stakes over 1200m at Warwick Farm on February 18.

On that same day Hay List would be a huge carrot to go down south to Melbourne, he’s locked in for the Lightning Stakes where he’ll be favourite down the Flemington straight.

Schofield says he’s made no decisions yet and he’ll wait to see until things are finalised.

“It’s a tough situation to be in, whichever way you go you’re going to upset somebody but at the end of the day we hope we can make a situation that suits everyone,” he said.

He trialled Manawani this morning and said he’s happy although the horse is still a way off being race ready.

“He’s probably a stronger horse now then he was last prep in the spring,” he said.

“He’s put on a little bit of weight since his first trial.

“His work this morning indicated that he’s got a little bit to work on still.”

He says the Melbourne campaign during the spring will provide benefits this time in.

“He’s given me every impression that he’s progressed from there, the trip away from home does the world of good mentally as well as physically,” he said.

There’s a chance Manawanui could run a week earlier in the Expressway Stakes at Rosehill where he’d be suited by weight for age conditions.

“There’s an option there, it follows the same sort of pattern he had last program three weeks between races,” he said.

As for Hay List there’s plenty to like about that option as well.

“He’s been out for so long, John’s done well to get him into the condition he is at the moment, trial was super,” he said.

Schofield is currently in second spot behind Hugh Bowman on the Sydney jockey’s premiership.
