Maluckyday On Verge Of Spring Carnival Start

Maluckyday could start his spring campaign in the Warwick Stakes this Saturday

Maluckyday is on the verge of beginning his spring carnival campaign after having a three month spell following his seventh placing in The BMW behind the ill-fated Cedarberg in the autumn.

The five-year-old gelding finished fourth in a 900 metre barrier trial at Rosehill Gardens racecourse earlier this morning.

“I thought it was a very good trial,” owner Nick Moraitis said.

Maluckyday was unable to place in his three race starts during the autumn, a problem that Moraitis puts down to a virus.

“He had a little bit of a virus and we had to stop training him for a week,” Moraitis said.

“That was the real reason; these things knock you around like a human being.

“Touch wood everything’s in great order at this point in time.”

Maluckyday has been nominated for a run in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm this Saturday.

“Whether he starts this week or goes to Melbourne the following week I don’t know,” Moraitis said.

Moraitis is content to leave the decision up to trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes.

“I never tell a trainer how to do his job,” he said.

Jockey Jim Cassidy is set to follow Maluckyday around during the spring, with Glen Boss enlisted as a back-up.

“Jim will go anywhere to ride him,” Moraitis said.

“God forbid if anything happened to Jimmy, Glen Boss will ride him.”

As well as Maluckyday, Moraitis also has talented five-year-old Love Conquers All back in preparation for the spring carnival.

“Love Conquers All is back in work,” he said.

“He’s been a very unlucky horse last prep.”

The Mossman entire finished second five times in seven starts.

“Hopefully he can go one better this time,” Moraitis said.
