Magicool is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Cup odds and will record the biggest upset in the modern history of the race if he is successful this afternoon.

Magicool stamped himself as a stayer to watch when he took out the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival and he finished a credible fifth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) before he was sent to the spelling paddock.

He made a slow start to his autumn campaign, but he produced a strong staying effort to finish fourth behind Delicacy in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 9 and he returned to winning form against the older horses at Flemington on May 23 before he produced the best performance of his career to date to take out the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben on June 6.

Magicool was set for the Caulfield Cup at the start of his 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, but he has been uncompetitive Group 1 in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29, Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 12, Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 26 and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4 and as a result is available at monster Caulfield Cup odds.

The connections of Magicool will take some hope from the fact that there have been a number of upsets in the modern editions of the Caulfield Cup and that only one favourite has won the race in the last decade.

Mr Lomondy won the 1986 edition of the Caulfield Cup at the big quote of 33/1 and just two years later there was another boilover in the race when Imposera won for Ross McDonald at 50/1.

David Hayes took out the Caulfield Cup with another roughie in Fraar in 1993, but the biggest upset in the recent history of the Caulfield Cup occurred in 1998 when English stayer Taufan’s Melody scored a very controversial win at the massive price of 66/1 – despite not technically being qualified to run in the race.

There have been no Caulfield Cup upsets of that magnitude in the last 15 years, but Godolphin stayer All The Good upset the likes of Littorio to win the race at 40/1 in 2008 and the likes of Viewed (12/1 in 2009), Descarado (16/1 in 2010), Dunaden (12/1 in 2012), Fawkner (10/1 in 2013) and Admire Rakti (10/1 in 2014) all won the race at double figure odds.

Magicool is the extreme outsider at Caulfield Cup odds of $151 and the other roughies include Protectionist ($61), Trip To Paris ($34), Grand Marshal ($51), Lucia Valentina ($34) and Magnapal ($51).
