Magic Millions Guineas Results – Deiheros Wins by Two Lengths

It was a great start to the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) with Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) winner Mywayorthehighway taking the lead while race favourite Hijack Hussy couldn’t go the speed and drifted back into fourth last.

With 700 metres left to go, the Mick Mair-trained Mywayorthehighway led half a length from Aerobar and Echo Gal. Deiheros was on the fence and the Lloyd Kennewell-trained gelding would soon make his move.

Into the straight, the gelding took the shortcut and sped up the inside to clearly lead with 50 metres left to go. He won running away from runners up Testashadow and Echo Gal.

Deiheros sat in the first four for most of the race, enjoying a beautiful run with Ric McMahon before bolting away to win when the rest of the field left the rails.

It was a surprise turn-around for the gelding who did everything wrong in the Vo Rogue Plate last time out, finishing four and a half lengths behind the winner in tenth place. The addition of a tongue-tie obviously proved successful.

“He did everything right today,” McMahon said after the race.

“The tongue-tie changed a bit and probably just horses outside him too. The other day he got on the wrong leg but this time he got it on the first time.

“I definitely thought he was in with a chance today and he did the job.”

The hoop is hopeful the 2015 Magic Millions Guineas win is the beginning of a strong partnership between himself and trainer Lloyd Kennewell.

Kennewell was understandably ecstatic with the win considering he pocketed $570,000 in prizemoney on a horse that cost the stable just $6,500.

“The last 200 metres was good, it was a great win and a great ride by Riccy McMahon,” he said.

“We brought the horse up early to have a run-up because he really didn’t handle the track the other day but today he got around it beautifully with a beautiful ride.

“It was effortless, it was beautiful, it was what we’re here for.

“He didn’t have much luck in the Vo Rogue, he did everything wrong basically but he had a few gear changes and it all worked beautiful today.

“He galloped really well on Tuesday morning and this is right up there with winning the Adelaide Cup.”

The three-year-old gelding has placed in eight of his ten career starts but this win was by far his highlight.

“We paid $6,500 for him in Adelaide and we always try to look for a few bargains and a few of the better priced ones. It’s good to see this horse win for the battlers,” Kennewell concluded.
