Star Perth galloper Luckygray will be transferred to a Melbourne stable as connections bid for success at the spring carnival.

A trainer is yet to be announced for the five-year-old but part-owner Barry Mitchell said Robert Smerdon is the current front-runner.

Mitchell said the move was necessary in order to give the grey the best possible chance of producing his best in races such as the Cox Plate.

“The move will expose him to better company and open up more possibilities for us,” Mitchell told the Geraldton Guardian.

“A Cox Plate would be really nice but we will see.

“We do not know how he will shape up against the really good horses.”

Luckygray has already made two unsuccessful trips east but connections are hoping a permanent base in Melbourne will allow him to settle and show his best.

Despite starring at home in Perth, the Bradbury’s Luck gelding hasn’t finished better than fourth in four starts in Melbourne.

His overall career record stands at 12 wins from 20 starts for more than $1.8 million in prizemoney.

Highlights include winning last year’s Group 1 Kingtson Town Classic and the Group 1 Railway Stakes in 2011.

Luckygray is a popular runner in the west and has also taken out other Perth features the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes and the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes, Belmont Sprint, Roma Cup and Asian Beau Stakes.
