Lucas Cranach onwards and upwards for the Melbourne Cup

German import Lucas Carnach will be ridden more conservatively in the Melbourne Cup

Star Sydney rider Corey Brown says he will ride the $6million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) third favourite Lucas Cranach “more conservative” than was the case in the Caulfield Cup.

The German import was sent around the field in the Caulfield feature prior to the home turn before running out of steam in the final 100m.

Trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, most gave Lucas Cranach pass mark particularly as he had suffered from a cracked heel prior to finishing fifth in the Caulfield Cup behind Southern Speed.

Brown worked the $8 Melbourne Cup hope at Mornington and in the process was nearly thrown off.

“I was up on his head at one stage and he was having a play and I nearly fell off him -he’s feeling very fresh and bright,” Brown said.

“He’s come through the Caulfield Cup really, really well.

“After being here in Australia for a while and Lee changing his trackwork he has gotten sharper.

“He’s rectified the cracked heel problem and I rode him this morning at Mornington and he’s 100 per cent.

“Now horse and rider know each other better, he’ll give a good sight in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington – he will love the big track.

“I think he’ll be mid-field, no closer (in the Melbourne Cup).

“Watching his replays, he’s always come from behind or midfield and when he gets a good bit of daylight he charges to the line.”
