Lucas Cranach Cleared For Caulfield Cup

Lucas Cranach has been passed fit to race in the 2011 Caulfield Cup after the chief vet with Racing Victoria cleared him of a foot complaint.

It was reported earlier in the week that he was struggling with a foot abscess however the real problem was later identified as a cracked heel.

This is likely to have come about after he pulled a shoe last week but they are yet to confirm if that was the cause.

For trainer Anthony Freedman it’s a definite relief although he says he was never too nervous about it.

“He got through the vet without any issues, he’s all set to go,” he said.

“We weren’t as concerned as some out there…It’s obviously nice to have it behind us and we can move on now.”

The Freedman team can now look forward to the Caulfield Cup, a race where they’ve been quite well backed to upset the favourite.

Video’s of Lucas Cranach racing in Germany have been a popular feature on Youtube of late and Freedman admits they were key in highlighting just how good a finish he has.

“That was the big attraction for everyone when we looked at the horse,” he said.

“Once you saw them you had to be impressed and I was pretty quick to get on the front foot and get some clients together.”

This will be his first start since arriving in Australia and they’re just hoping the change of conditions don’t cause too many problems.

“Our only concern is probably Caulfield, his racing pattern probably isn’t suited to Caulfield,” he said.

With that in mind they’ll attempt to not be too far off the pace in the early stages so he can get a decent shot in the final furlong or two.

“I’m imagining he’ll be mid field, I woodlot have thought he get any closer than that,” he said.

“It’s hard to asses because all his runs he’s been taken right to the back.

“He might have a bit more tactical speed then he’s shown in the past.”
