Lizard Island’s Victoria Derby Odds Shorten

Lizard Island has been backed into 2015 Victoria Derby odds of $8 and has been a clear market mover in betting markets for the Group 1 event that will be held at Flemington this afternoon.

Lizard Island opened at a quote of $12 when the 2015 Victoria Derby final field was released early in the week, but there has been consistent support for the Sebring colt and he is now on the third line of betting behind Tarzino ($3.30) and Kia Ora Koutou ($7).

The Sebring entire stamped himself as a genuine Caulfield Guineas contender when he finished second behind Bon Aurum in the Listed Pin And Win Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and he went on to finish second behind Press Statement in the Group 1 event at Caulfield on October 10.

Lizard Island was far from disgraced when second behind Sacred Eye in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic (2000m) at Caulfield on October 17 and trainer Pat Hyland told RSN this morning that he could not have the three-year-old in any better condition ahead of the 2015 Victoria Derby.

“He is great and he is in good shape,” Hyland said.

“His form has been pretty great really.

“I think with a little bit more patience he probably could have won last fortnight.

“We didn’t think he had the nicest run in that race, but having said that he didn’t get beaten by far and the winner was too good.

“I am very happy with the horse and I am delighted he has drawn where he has drawn because he is going to get nice cover in the race.

“The rest will tell us how it works.

“We are not going to be too far away.

“The horse is in great nick and it is starting to rain here, so that is not going to hurt him.

“I can’t get him any better and he is in as great shape as he can be going into this race.”

Tarzino remains on top of 2015 Victoria Derby betting markets, but he has been a big drifter in the last 24 hours and he has gone from $2.40 out to $3.30 to deliver Mick Price his long awaited win in the Group 1 event.

Kia Ora Koutou remains on the second line of Victoria Derby betting at a quote of $7, while Get The Picture has remained steady at $10 throughout the week.

There has been a sprinkling of support in the 2015 Victoria Derby Day betting market for Shards ($14 into $12) and Etymology ($17 into $13), while Ayers Rock ($26 out to $41), Man Of Choice ($21 out to $26), Scadden’s Run ($71 out to $101), Pay Up Bro ($14 out to $17), Colonel Custer ($26 out to $31) and Iron Boss ($34 out to $61).
