While Perth may have lost Hay List when he was transferred to Gosford trainer John McNair in 2009, the state is confident the newest version of the superstar is in their midst.

Trainer Jim Taylor trained Hay List to win his first eight starts in Western Australia, however, the owners then elected to send him to New South Wales for bigger opportunities.

Now Taylor is hopeful that Barakey can be the next Perth champion.

The three-year-old gelding won his first start in the Belmont Playeronline.com.au Handicap on June 15 in a style reminiscent of Hay List’s early days.

Yesterday the Key Business gelding won his second start with similar ease, proving to Taylor that he has something very unique in his stables.

“He’s pretty special,” Taylor said.

“It would have been interesting to see how quick he could have gone.

“We’ve only had one better than him before, Hay List, and this bloke’s going that way.”

Taylor said that “the sky’s the limit” for Barakey, who is due to have his next start at Belmont next Saturday.

“I think this horse is going to go a long way,” Taylor said.

“He looked like he had six or eight lengths up his sleeve to me (in yesterday’s race).”

Barakey has won both of his two races over the 1,000 metre distance and by a combined eight lengths.
