Glen Boss is tipping Smart Missile (pictured) to win the Caulfield Guineas

A horribly timed accident means Glen Boss won’t be able to ride Smart Missile in the Caulfield Guineas tomorrow but that doesn’t mean he won’t be following the race with keen interest.

Boss broke his shoulder after Crystal Lily collapsed and died during track work a few weeks back ruining his 2011 spring hopes.

Smart Missile was to be his flagship ride of the carnival, a horse he rates as his best since Makybe Diva.

Corey Brown is the rider who’s picked up the mount in the Caulfield Guineas tomorrow and as far as Boss is concerned he’ll be the winner.

“He’s a better horse than Helmet and Manawanui. He’s got their measure,” he said.

“I know a lot of people have dropped off him (after his last start) but that happens all the time.”

It’s shaping as one of the hardest races punters have seen all carnival with Helmet, Manawanui and Smart Missile joined by the impressive Chase The Rainbow as almost inseparable prospects.

Smart Missile easily had the better of Helmet in the Run To The Rose but Manawanui trumped both of them in the main event Golden Rose.

After that though Helmet kicked to another level when winning the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and Smart Missile was trapped at the back of the field in open company during the Rupert Clarke stakes.

While that was happening Manawanui cantered to another easy victory in a lacklustre Stan Fox Stakes leaving a mess of form lines almost impossible to decipher.

Trainer of Smart Missile Anthony Cummings said despite finishing tenth he was content with his Rupert Clarke run, something supported by the fact he clocked the fastest final 400m and 200m sectionals.

“His run was great last time. It was as good as you could expect, given the circumstances,” he said.

Smart Missile will only get winkers for the first time tomorrow, something designed to sharpen him up just a touch.

“He hit a flat spot in the Rupert Clarke and first-up. We just want to get him a bit more focused,” he said.

It could be a real battle of tactics with Helmet and Manawanui expected to strode forward with Smart missile tucked in behind and Chase The Rainbow somewhere a little further back.

If there is one area of concern for Smart Missile it could be the fact he’s yet to run over a mile, but Cummings doesn’t agree.

“I think Helmet and Chase The Rainbow are the only ones to run over the trip, but I don’t expect it to worry him,” he said.
