He’s a long way from the perfect alley and he’s far from the perfect weight but for Perfect Punch today a perfect result is a real possibility in the Listed Geelong Classic.

The South Australian based three year old knows what it takes to win races, in fact he’s won his last three in a row for Leon Macdonald including a gutsy triumph last start in the Hill Smith Stakes.

Today he makes his first visit across to the east coast and faces his biggest challenge yet in a  quality Geelong Classic field.

Making things even tougher are the fact he’s drawn gate 13 of 16 and also that he’ll need to lug a 58kg weight around with him, 2kg more than any other horse.

Still though jockey Clare Lindop is confident his streak can extend to four with victory in Geelong this afternoon.

“He’s been improving each run so hopefully he can improve again today,” she said.

She does acknowledge though that improvement will have to come if he is to figure in the finish.

” He’s won his last three at Adelaide, needs to step up to be Melbourne class.”

At Morphettville Perfect Punch has been more or less able to dictate his own terms from out in front, that won’t be the case today but Lindop says that’s not actually a bad thing.

” We’re pretty hopefully threes a wee bit of pace in the race and he’s a bit better chasing,” she said.

She says it’s pretty tough to get a read on him in track work and he’s the type of animal that lifts on race day.

“He’s a very casual type of horse, big horse and still growing into himself,” she said.
