Lilliburlero Posts Triscay Stakes Triumph In Sydney

The final race of the day at Royal Randwick has been won by Lilliburlero, who stormed home in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes.

A brave ride saw Southern Girl almost steal the win, with rider Jim Cassidy going strong out in front during the early stages of the race.

However, the mare had to be content with fourth after being caught in the final stages of the Triscay Stakes.

Lilliburlero won the Triscay Stakes ahead of second place-getter Recoinage and third place-getter Any Day Will Do.

The Redoute’s Choice mare was having her first-up start for the autumn in today’s race after a long summer spell following a mixed spring campaign.

Lilliburlero won an $85,000 Handicap at Rosehill during her eight-start preparation, however, failed to place in any of her four Black Type runs.

The four-year-old mare is trained at Rosehill Gardens by David Payne and is already nominated for the 2014 Queen Of The Turf Stakes on April 19.

“She’s a big girl and she hasn’t done much racing but the blinkers have really switched her on,” Payne said.

“I just wanted to get black type. 1400 (metres) is not beyond her so we’ll look at something decent.”

Jockey Jay Ford was aboard Lilliburlero for her Triscay Stakes triumph in Sydney and it was the first time he has partnered the mare during her horse racing career.

“I think the good speed in the race really made it for her,” Ford said.

“She towed me up the rise and she was strong on the line.

“I was pretty confident I was going to reel (Southern Girl) in.

“On the furlong I knew I had it.”

Lilliburlero has now won four of her 12 race starts and has earned more than $244,000 in prize money so far.
