Group 1 winning mare Streama will only have a light 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with trainer Guy Walter looking ahead to the 2014 Doncaster Handicap (1600m).

Walter told TVN that Streama is set to resume in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on August 24 and will have only a few additional starts in Sydney before being sent back to the paddock.

“She’ll run in a few of the early spring races then she will be spelled and brought back to prepare for the Doncaster,” Walter told TVN.

The Stratum mare had a lengthy autumn/ winter campaign and Walter is clearly looking out for the long term future of the 2012 Australian Oaks (2400m) winner.

Streama was one of the most consistent performers during the 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival but was unable to break through for a victory.

She resumed with a second place finish behind Skytrain in the Group 3 Southern Cross (1200m), finished second in the Listed Wiggle Stakes (1400m), produced her only poor run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and was third behind Appearance in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m).

Streama finished her Sydney campaign with a fourth place finish on a heavy track in the Doncaster Handicap and after a brief let-up travelled north for the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The rising five-year-old was unlucky not to add a third Group 1 victory to her racing resume, recording a third place finish behind Linton in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and was runner-up to Red Tracer in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

Walter has generally avoided taking Streama to Victoria throughout her racing career with her only starts in Melbourne being her victory in the 2012 Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and her eighth place finish behind stablemate Appearance in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
