Let’s Elope winner Don’t Doubt Mamma to Toorak Handicap

Trainer Tony McEvoy is keen to step Don’t Doubt Mamma up to the 1600m after she scored a rails hugging win in the Group 2 $200,000 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington today.

The well performed Don’t Doubt Mamma had to carry 58kg today against the mares and McEvoy can see her being a real threat with a light weight in the Group 1 $500,000 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 8.

“She is very talented and with 58kg on her back, she is not very big. I will talk to the guys that own her but I would be confident to get her into a handicap back in weight and she has the stats to win a race like the Toorak,” McEvoy said.

Don’t Doubt Mama draw the inside barrier in the big field and Dwayne Dunn settled her on the fence midfield but was held up behind a wall of horse when heads were turned for home.

Dunn had nowhere to go in the early stages of the straight and had to sit and wait on Don’t Doubt Mamma ($6.50) before securing a rail’s hugging run before poking her nose in front right on the line.

Thames Court ($8.50) ran a great race to finished second ahead of $26 chance Manageress while the $5.50 favourite Telopea was never in the race and wound up in eighth spot

“Dwayne, he didn’t have many other options and he showed great patience, he didn’t panic and he trusted her and she is a real pro and just loves winning,” McEvoy said.
