Atlantic Jewel will miss the Crown Oaks because of a leg injury

Unbeaten filly Atlantic Jewel has been ruled out of the $1 million Crown Oaksnext Thursday after pulling up with a hamstring injury.

The ailment was discovered after Atlantic Jewel’s seven length Wakeful Stakes win at Flemington yesterday.

The three-year-old rose to fame after posting an effortless win in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas during the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

Early reports are that Atlantic Jewel will likely miss the remainder of the spring racing carnival.

Jockey Michael Rodd was completely unaware of the problem immediately after yesterday’s Wakeful Stakes win.

”That was painless,” Rodd said.

”I thought she would win by a margin, but not like that.

“I just want to go and watch the replay.

“She is so brilliant and I’m just looking to the Oaks now.”

Atlantic Jewel has won all five of her career starts and has earned close to $600,000 in prize money.

The injury comes after trainer Mark Kavanagh expressed his desire to spell Atlantic Jewel following her Thousand Guineas win, however, the filly’s connections decided to press on.

It remains to be seen whether the Fastnet Rock filly will race in Australia again, with rumours surfacing over the past few days that her owners, Coolmore Stud, are planning to take her overseas in 2012.
