After his famous post race celebrations during last year’s Magic Millions Carnival it seems a shame that popular Queanbeyan trainer Neville Layt won’t be part of the action in 2012.

Layt won the $2 million Magic Millions Classic with Karuta Queen in 2011 and he could barely control his excitement both during and after the run.

He’s back on the Gold Coast this year but the sales ring will be his major focus.

He picked up a few horses already on day one of the sales with more to come as the week progresses.

“We bought three nice little horses,” he said.

He says he’s quite happy with how the sales are shaping, especially in the lower price ranges where he’s most prominent.

“The horses that are quality horses are good prices, it helps the buyers this year, the horses we bought were in the 50k range,” he said

“We don’t have to go over the top.”

Of course all of this effort is going into finding another Karuta Queen, a horse he picked up for just $30,000 as a yearling.

Since then she’s gone on to the highest level with a hugely promising autumn prep now almost here.

“She’s come back better than ever, she’ll trial next Tuesday over at Canberra,” Layt said.

“The next weekend we’ll run her at Warwick Farm over 1000m and on to the Light Fingers three weeks later.”

Her spell went perfectly, in fact it almost went too perfectly.

“She put on 50kg so we had to get her out of there,” Layt said.

“I think she might have returned a little bit stronger again, she’s a lot bulkier filly now.

“She’s been working very very good.”

As far a rematch with Black Caviar at any stage in the future Layt says he’s happy to steer clear.

“I spoke to Pete (Moody) yesterday and I just said I’d leave it up to him now,” he said.

“Black Caviar is the best sprinter in the world, to be able to run second to her and lead her for a while that was the thrill of it all.”
