Latoria Headed For Summer Scorcher

Jim Taylor is looking towards a start in the Summer Scorcher in Perth got his talented mare Latoria this New Years Eve.

The five-year-old mare has won both her previous starts this campaign, with her most recent being a three length victory in the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Ascot last Saturday.

The Oratorio mare will now contest the 1,000 metre Scorcher instead of the RS Crawford Stakes, which was her original target.

“There’s not a lot around for her so she might have to step up to the Scorcher,” Taylor said.

“I’ll see what horses are in it and what rating penalty she’d get if she won it.

“If it’s too much, I’ll look for another welter.”

Latoria has now won six of her 11 race starts and has earned more than $150,000 in prize money.

The mare has not finished outside the top four once during her career.

The horse was bred by her owner Des de Largie and is out of a Metallic Storm mare named Laventour.

Latoria is so lightly raced due to problems with her legs and feet which have to be managed with extreme care.

“She’s always shown a fair bit but hasn’t got the best legs in the world and has average feet,” Taylor said.

“She’s very upright in front and if she was trained on the track she wouldn’t stand up.

“She’s very much like Metallic Storm – very fast but you have to manage them.”

Latoria will go into the Scorcher on December 31st after a four week freshen up.

The Summer Scorcher will be held on the same day as the Group 2 Perth Cup, which is one on the biggest racing events on the Western Australian calendar.
