Late 2015 Victoria Derby Tips: Tarzino Too Short

Racing expert Daniel O’Sullivan has Tarzino on top of his 2015 Victoria Derby tips, but he believes that the favourite is under the odds in betting markets for the Group 1 event that will be held at Flemington this afternoon.

Tarzino first emerged as a genuine Victoria Derby contender when he finished over the top of his rivals to win the Slickpix Maiden Plate (1400m) at Ballarat on August 27 and he won again in The Cove Hotel Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on September 19.

The Tavistock colt did not have a great deal of luck in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 10, but he was still able to savage the line to finish seventh and he ran the fastest closing sectionals of the day when he finished third behind Jameka and Shards in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

O’Sullivan believes that Tarzino has been very impressive during his 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign and he is deserving of his status as Victoria Derby favourite, but he told RSN that he would rather back the likes of Lizard Island and Kia Ora Koutou than Tarzino at his current Victoria Derby odds.

“No way,” O’Sullivan asked if he could get Tarzino that short.

“I think that he is the best chance in the race and it is well-documented that run at Moonee Valley was huge.

“He was back against the bias and there was a big speed increase at the 800 which really made it hard for him to chase and make ground and he was trying to do it around the outside, which as we know was a disadvantage.

“His effort to run on to third left him with an overall rating that is a little bit behind the standard here, but he has such obvious potential to go ahead here and 2500 at Flemington looks a really good scenario for him to do that.

“It is just speculative on how much he is going to improve his rating here.

“While that scope for improvement definitely makes him the horse to beat I can’t get him anywhere near the current market price.

“He is a horse that I will probably be looking more to save on than to back for a winning result.

Tarzino is currently available at 2015 Victoria Derby odds of $3.70 with Ladbrokes and he remains a clear favourite from Kia Ora Koutou ($7) and Lizard Island ($8).
