Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill is aiming at a double whammy when Lady Colours tackles the Magic Millions Tickets Online Now QTIS (2YO, 900m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
A win would not only see the Red Dazzler-Rainbow Joy filly qualify for $2m Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 14 but also collect a healthy QTIS 600 bonus.
In March, Hill took a gamble and bought Lady Colours for $90,000, more on type than breeding though the latter holds up strongly.
“I didn’t have a buyer but when I saw her I just had to have her,” Hill said.
There might have been a bit of sentiment involved in the purchase.
The grand-dam of Lady Colours is 1990 Magic Millions Classic winner Dancer’s Joy – it was trained by Hill’s old boss the late great Caulfield trainer Geoff Murphy.
Advertised on Hill’s website, he ended up keeping a share of the horse with much of it being sold to Ascot Lodge owner Les Cowell.
Lady Colours has recouped $31,200 of which $17,200 is prizemoney and the remainder QTIS 600 bonuses.
The $31,200 would have placed Lady Colours on the border of a MM Classic start but bonuses don’t count in the MM Classic order of entry.
It leaves Lady Colours 24th in the order and only a win would qualify her for Queensland’s richest race.
Saturday’s prelude is worth $32,000 to the winner with an added $42,000 in QTIS 600 bonus.
The win would move Lady Colours to 11th in the 16 horse Classic final field.
With bonuses, a win would also repay the purchase price of the filly after just four starts.
If Lady Colours gets into the Classic she will be having three runs in three weeks giving Hill more to ponder.
The first of those runs was in Sydney last Saturday.
Lady Colours finished third to Classic third favourite Amorino in the Summer Super Saver Ticket Hcp (1100m) at Rosehill beaten 1-3/4 lengths.
She had drawn barrier 13 while the winner had barrier one.
“I think she is a good horse,” Hill said.
“The travel never bothered her at all, if you look at her now you would think she had never been anywhere.
“She has a good attitude and constitution and she eats up.
“I would have liked to have drawn alongside Amorino, I think she would have of given him a real race, we had to work and he drew one.
“I had Lady Colours entered for both Brisbane and Sydney last week hoping to get a good alley and drew badly in both.
“I just thought the 13 alley is easier at Rosehill than it is at Doomben.
“But like I said, she took no harm from the trip at all and goes into Saturday’s race in good nick.”
The race also sees Adelaide trainer Tony McEvoy run Little Critter.
It sits on the border of a Magic Millions Classic start presently 16th in the order.
Little Critter has $35,100 in prizemoney but by just running fifth and earning $1000 it will improve its position to 15th.
Some of the opposition could leap frog Little Critter by winning though first starters Royal Regard, Schweiz and Clever Trick as well as the unplaced Aronson will still fall short.
Little Critter could be help by natural attrition though those above him are standing solid in the field at this stage.
Even Kiwi galloper Travino will make the trip and become the Classic’s first international runner.
Matamata-based trainer Peter McKay crosses the Tasman with the winner of the 2011 Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe and the Listed Wentwood Grange Stakes (1100m) at Te Rapa last-start on December 10.
“He had some time off after his last win and he’s done really well since then,” McKay said.
Travino is by 1997 Magic Millions Classic winner General Nediym whose progeny has also had success in the race.
In 2003 Regimental Gal and in 2010 Military Rose won the Classic for the former top sprinter.
