Lamasery has recovered well for Doomben Cup

Doomben Cup hopeful Lamasery has recovered from a hard run in Group 2 $358,000 Wimmers Soft Drinks A. D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 4 and is ready to stand up and be counted on Saturday at Doomben.

Trainer David Vandyke said that Lamasery took several days to get over the tough Gold Coast run but is now back to his old self and ready to line up in the Group 1 $500,000 Kirks Doomben Cup (2000m).

Vandyke said that the Commands gelding was exhausted after running fourth to Lights Of Heaven and Foreteller in the Hollindale Stakes after making a long sustained run but kept trying right to the finish in his usual fighting style.

“He could barely stand up,” Vandyke said.

“He was just out on his feet at the 200m in that race. He doesn’t know how to stop. It took a few days, but the last 48 hours he has really come to hand again.”

Gold Coast jockey Glen Colless will be having his first ride on the six year old and will be instructed to wait as long as possible before letting Lamasery wind up for his final run home.

“This horse has an electrifying 300m sprint if he is held up long enough,” Vandyke said.

Vandyke also hinted that Lamasery is no good in the wet and if the rain persists and the track becomes heavy again, he wouldn’t run.

“He is a duffer in the wet. He’s been beaten in some pretty low races when the track is wet,” Vandyke said.

In early markets, Lamasery is a $5 chance and will be meeting Lights Of Heaven and Foreteller again who are the $3.50 equal favourites with Beaten Up and Hippopus on the next line of betting at $10.

The Chris Waller trained Foreteller was desperately unlucky when second at the Gold Coast after coming from last and has a great chance of continuing the leading Sydney trainer’s outstanding winning run.

Waller had a very successful Sydney Autumn Carnival training five Group 1 winners and that form has continued since with the stable saddling up seven winners on Saturday, five at Rosehill, one at Kembla Grange as well as Hawkspur winning the Group 3 $125,000 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2100m) at Eagle Farm.

English import Beaten Up and old warhorse Danleigh as well as Foreteller will give Waller a strong chance of winning another Group 1 in the Doomben Cup.
