David Vandyke is looking to defy Lamasery’s breeding by running him over 2,400 metres in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap at Rosehill tomorrow.

Although according to his pedigree Lamasery should not be able to travel over 1,600 metres, Vandyke is confident he can go even further after his impressive win over 2,000 metres in the Kingston Town Stakes last start.

“He was entitled to stop being second up over the 2000,” Vandyke said.

“It was a really gutsy win.”

The Commands gelding overcame a wide barrier to beat Crafty Irna by a head.

“He actually drew outside Crafty Irna,” Vandyke said.

“He didn’t do Crafty Irna any favours at all.”

Despite heavy criticism, Vandyke believes Lamasery deserves his chance to demonstrate his staying ability.

“Looking at the horse and looking at the way he performs he’s certainly entitled to have a crack at it,” Vandyke said.

The five-year-old has been allocated the top weight of 57 kilograms in tomorrow’s race.

“When he won the four in a row earlier this year we were claiming on most of those,” Vandyke said.

“It’s a big weight for a little horse but he’s got a big heart.”

The trainer will decide on a next-up start for Lamasery following his Colin Stephen run.

“We’ll look at The Metropolitan (Handicap) a week later if he pulls up alright, if he doesn’t we’ll head south to Melbourne,” he said.

Vandyke has not ruled out a start in the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup on November 1.

“We’re still headed in that direction, it’s everyone’s dream to have a runner in the Melbourne Cup,” Vandyke said.

“If we can get him to 2,400 (metres) why not 3,200 (metres)?”
