Risk Aversioncould be one of the most exciting mare prospects on the East Coast but don’t expect her to be featuring in black type events of the spring carnival.

Deagon based trainer Michael Lakey is being extremely cautious with the four year old daughter of Encosta de Lago and it’s likely we won’t see her again for another couple of months.

Risk Aversion only ran her first race in March this year when she finished second across 1110m in a maiden at Doomben.

Two weeks after that she had her next start at Eagle Farm across 1200m and she broke her maiden with a dominant two length triumph.

After that she was spelled again before returning in August where she was back to Doomben and 1030m with another win.

Since then she’s continued that winning form with a 1200m victory at Eagle Farm and then last start across 1350m at Doomben.

She’s building an impressive record but Lakey says that’s enough for the time being.

“Up to now she’s not been a filly who could have coped with a tough program anyway,” Lakey said.

“My first thought is to give her a little break now and concentrate on some of the good fillies and mares races over the Christmas period.

“She will keep getting a bit better with time and there are better days ahead I feel.”

Ric McMahon is the jockey who got Risk Aversion to the line in the last stride on Saturday and he said he supports the decision to wait it out for the perfect race.

“I’d like to see her in a race where there was terrific pressure up front and she could sit midfield and really find the line,” McMahon said.
