Laing wins back to back Maribyrnong Plates

Trainer Robbie Laing made it back to back wins in the Group 3 $150,000 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington today with Boomwaa leading all of the way for a comfortable win.

Laing won last year with the Charge Forward colt Direct Charge and today Boomwaa ($6.50) gave nothing else a chance after bouncing straight to the front down the middle of the straight course and ran away to score by three lengths over Lockroy ($5.50) with Silent Whisper ($4.60 favourite) a further long head away in third spot.

Boomwaa was having his third race start and showed the benefit of having that experience with a mistake free run with Laing indicating that the Mutawaajid two year old would easily handle distances up to 1400m and possibly 1600m.

“The way he goes he will be a lovely ride over 1400m or a mile. He covers a lot of ground. Always did right from when we broke him in and his fitness and his experience was to the fore today. He absolutely bolted in,” Laing said.

“We won this race last year with Direct Charge and the year before that we got beaten a neck with Andre Roo Hoo.”

“Had a great week, the Derby and a Group 3, beautiful.”

Today’s win by Boomwaa capped off a great week for Laing who took out the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington last Saturday, the first day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival, with Rakti three year old Polanski.

Winning rider Vlad Duric agreed with Laing that race fitness and experience was the advantage that Boomwaa had over the rest of the field, the majority of which were first starters.

“The thing that this bloke had in his corner today was the fact that he had the experience and is a fit horse and he got the job done beautifully,” Duric said.

“He ran straight through the line beautiful. That’s the difference in these early two year old races, you have a bloke like this that does everything spot on, had the experience, it won him the race.”
