Trainer Robbie Laing is confident that Lord Of The Sky can record his third straight win when he takes on a tough mid-week field in the Guinot International Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield tomorrow.

Lord Of The Sky finished his winter campaign with a dominant victory in the Procal Dairies Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield on July 13 and returned to the races with another comfortable win at the same venue on December 7.

Laing told Racing Ahead this morning that he has been delighted with the way Lord Of The Sky has progressed since his first-up win and believes he will be very tough to beat with just 52.5kg on his back in the Guinot International Handicap on Wednesday.

“It is the first time that I have been happy with him since June,” Laing said.

“He looks magnificent and his work has been fantastic since his win there a month ago.

“He has drawn out wide, but he has so much natural speed that he should cross pretty easily.

“He will be hard to beat with that much weight on his back.”

Laing already has a strong team heading towards the 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing, with Polanski and Boomwaa both set for Group 1 events, and the veteran trainer is confident that Lord Of The Sky also has the talent to compete at the highest level of racing.

The Danerich colt is set to get his first chance in a black type race in either the WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on February 1 or the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) on February 8 and Laing said his performance when stepped up in class will dictate how far he will go in the autumn.

“I think that he has the ability to do it,”

“Some of the sectionals that he can run on the training track are fantastic.

“Hopefully he can win tomorrow and then in a few weeks’ time he will go to either the WJ Adams at Caulfield or a week later in the Rubiton.

“He will have to stand and up and be counted then.”

Lord Of The Sky will face Anthony Freedman-trained Cruden Bay in the Guinot International Handicap; with the Not A Single Doubt colt looking to maintain his undefeated record after starting his career with wins in the Off The Track Plate at Bendigo (1100m) and the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) in March last year.
