Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy is hoping Perfect Pecs develops into a fine stayer

Perfect Pecs has had a couple of easy weeks but now it’s time for him to really step up according to trainer Rick Hore-Lacy.

He races at Sandown tomorrow in the fourth run of what has so far been a gruelling campaign.

He ran three times in as many weeks throughout May and June and while he was consistent he never finished in the money.

He’s finally had a little bit of a break and he drops back to the 1300m in the `Like’ Caulfield Racing On Facebook Hcp.

“He’s a pretty good horse but because we stood him up three weekends in a row we decided to ease right back in his work,” Hore-Lacy said.

“Wednesday is a suitable distance given the amount of work he has done as we have just cantered him around and put him on the walker.”

The trainer clearly believes Perfect Pins has promise, his final start in 2010 was in the Group 1 Victoria Derby.

Although he never got in that event finishing 13th, previously he had shown glimpses of potentially turning into a good horse.

He won his maiden at Kyneton Park before stepping up to Listed grade in the Geelong Classic over 2206m.

It was an exceptional run finishing a tight second to the winner Milestone.

He was spelled for around seven months after finishing 35 lengths off Lion Tamer in the Derby and this prep he’s been a touch short on luck.

He was fourth on a heavy track at Cranbourne first up but only a length and a bit off the winner.

At Lakeside on a slow track he was fifth and less than three lengths away and last start he was only two and a half back in 6th.

“He is a better horse than he has shown and with any luck he will demonstrate that this time in,” Hore-Lacy said.

“While the distance looks too short for him on Wednesday I think he will be finishing off strongly and could run very well.”

He has big plans for the horse long term and he even has aspirations of hitting the big time in the upcoming spring.

“He will be entered in some of the better races,” Hore-Lacy said.

“We live in dreams in this business and we would be hoping that he develops into a fine stayer.”

Hore-Lacy needs to worry about getting back into shape himself in the near future though, an episode of Bells Palsy has temporarily paralysed the right hand side of his face.

He can ease a bit of the pain tomorrow though with four horses in action at Sandown.

Lisa Cropp will take the ride of Perfect Pecs as well as Rainbow Queen while Daniel Stackhouse picks up Gone Skiing and Dwayne Dunn will be on Rhiannon’s Joy.
