The kiwi assault on Brisbane’s winter carnival continues this Saturday, with Zurella and Pimms Time set to contest the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup.

They will be out to follow in the footsteps of Quintessential who kicked off the carnival success for New Zealand on Saturday when relishing the wet conditions in the Chairman’s Handicap.

It is no secret that the Kiwi horses generally thrive in the wet and connections of both Zurella and Pimms Time will be hoping the early week wet weather continues in Brisbane this week.

While neither Pimms Time or Zurella are considered top Doomben Cup fancies, a wet track would improve their chances.

Pimms Time is yet to be seen in Australia but arrives with strong form on the board and is a noted wet-track performer.

The four-year-old mare has tasted success at her past two starts including in the Group 2 Travis Stakes where Quintessential had to settle for third.

Trained by Guy Lowry at Hastings, Pimms Time has won five of 12 starts, a record similar to Zurella.

The Shaune Ritchie-trained Zurella has won five of 16 starts including a Group 2 win at the spring carnival in the Let’s Elope Stakes.

But on paper the Zabeel mare looks the lesser of the Kiwi hopes, having struggled for form this preparation.

Zurella has shuffled back and forth between Australia and New Zealand this campaign but has secured just one minor placing form four starts.

Pimms Time and Zurella are $21 and $35 Doomben Cup chances respectively, with Chris Waller’s import Foreteller the current favourite at $3.20.
