Boom Kiwi colt Cauthen will arrive in Melbourne tonight heading towards the Group 1 $1m BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12.

Opaki trainer Andrew Campbell was forced to look to the Melbourne Spring Carnival with the Darci Brahma colt after scoring a runaway eight and a half lengths win on debut over 1200m at Te Rapa.

“We’ve always thought he was a great horse and his debut proved that,” Campbell said.

“It wasn’t a fluke, he ran a second faster than the other two-year-old race on the day and was really untouched.

“We’ve never had him wound up, we’ve always had this campaign in mind with him, and he’s really come through well.”

Campbell’s biggest problem now is earning enough prizemoney to earn a start in the major races and he will kick off Cauthen’s Melbourne campaign in a three year old Benchmark 78 over 100m at Moonee Valley on August 3.

Campbell is then keen to test Cauthen against some tougher company and has selected the Group 3 $135,000 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 17.

“Our biggest concern is making the field for the Vain,” Campbell said.

Campbelll’s 2010 Blamey Stakes winner Lord Tavistock, arrived in Melbourne as a three year old in 2008 with only one win to his credit and was able to make the Vain field only to be beaten by Fernandina.

“Tavistock went over there as a one-win horse with very little prizemoney and he made the Vain, but he’s done so well and we’ve kept the work up to him that we may possibly kick him off at Valley on the third,”  Campbell said.

Stablemate Weissmuller will accompany Cauthen to Melbourne for the Spring with Campbell aiming very high and will nominate the Hansome Ransom gelding for the Group 1 $3m Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Weissmuller finished well down the track behind Habibi in the Group 1 NZ$750,000 TV3 NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 2 but has a win at Group 3 level in the $70,000 Phil Cataldo Bloodstock Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Trentham.
