Peter Moody’s four year old mare King’s Rose has made an impressive Australian debut at Caulfield today, taking out the Group 2 Memsie Stakes from a quality field of horses. The new addition to Moody’s stable produced a great run home to win by a head from race favourite Heart Of Dreams and a strong finishing Red Colossus.
The 13 horse field featured a number of quality runners returning for their spring campaigns with some putting in good runs despite not finishing in the placings, such as Group 1 winner Shamrocker.
Today’s win is the first for King’s Rose in Australia after starting her career in New Zealand.
After the race Moody revealed that the next assignment for King’s Rose will most likely be the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley in 2 weeks. He also stated that he believes King’s Rose is best suited to 1 to 1 1/4 mile races and probably won’t step her up to the 1 1/2 mile.
If King’s Rose’s form continues then the ultimate target of this year’s spring campaign could be a shot at the Cox Plate in October.
Peter Moody’s other runner in the Memsie, Anacheeva, had a disappointing run and finished at the back of the field in 11th.
In the other Group race at Caulfield today, the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes, Peter Moody was also victorious with Golden Archer. The 3-year-old colt won by 1.75 lengths from Cross Of Gold and Vatican.
