King grabs surprise win on Flying Skipper

Jockey Steven King was able to grab a surprise win on 40-1 outsider Flying Skipper in the Listed $150,000 Myer Spring Fashion Stakes (1800m) at Flemington today.

Trainer John Hichmott, father of Melbourne Cup winning trainer Robert Hichmott thought Flying Skipper had been going well enough to finish in the top five and was ecstatic to see the three year old arrived in time to beat favourite Scapolo in the last stride.

“I didn’t really expect this horse to win, I thought he would run in the top five, I was quite confident that he would,” Hichmott said.

“I told Steven that and he said leave it to me.”

“I didn’t think Robbie’s horse would win the Cup too. He’s run in many others but I was very elated when he did, so it’s been a great week.”

“You always dream of winning a Melbourne Cup and Robbie has had aspirations for a long time. It’s come true and he’s a good lad and he’s doing a great job.”

King was very pleased to be reunited with Hickmott and win on Flying Skipper after the three year was backing up from a fourth placing at Morphettville last Saturday.

“It’s a good win. John’s been a great supporter of mine over the years,” King said.

“John gave me a bit of a rapt for the horse before I came out here.”

Flying Skipper started at the long odds of $41 and was able to arrive in time to win by a nose from $4.20 favourite Scapolo with Kazanluk ($8.50) a nose away in third in a very tight finish.
