Kimberley Star will be stepping out for the first time as a three year old after completing her two year old season with a winning double.
The Star Witness filly won a midweek two year old filly’s maiden at Warwick Farm on July 1 then Waterhouse stepped her up to Saturday company to win an open class two year old Handicap over 1400m at Randwick on July 11.
Waterhouse will also saddle up Mardi in the $85,000 Hume Doors & Timber Handicap (1400m), Countryman in the $85,000 Unbreakable Hilux Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (1300m) aand Spurtonic in the Listed $100,000 The Paslode Winter Challenge (1500m).
“The best of them is Kimberley Star, the others all have great chances,” Waterhouse told RSN.
“Toughest two year old in Sydney racing. She just does everything, rolls up her sleeves gets on with the job. I can’t see why she wouldn’t win again.”
“She is a really beautiful filly, daughter of Star Witness and just going places.”
Bookmakers at Ladbrokes.com.au agree with ‘The First Lady Of The Turf’ and have installed Kimberley Star as the $2.30 favourite for the Structaflor Yellowtongue Plate.
Blake Shinn takes the ride on Kimberley Star and is certain to go forward from barrier seven in the nine horse field.
Waterhouse is also expecting Mardi, a $5 chance, to figure in the prizemoney and said that she will strip fitter this week with two recent Randwick runs under her belt.
Mardi resumed for a sixth over 1300m in a BenchMark 85 Handicap on June 20 then ran seventh in a BenchMark 80 Handicap over 1600m on July 11 and has the claiming apprentice Winona Costin in the saddle.
“She has only just seemed to have hit her hobbles,” Waterhouse said.
“She is a big gross mare, her mother was the same. I do think when Mardi can get over further you will see the best of her, but I and very happy with her.”
The ever confident Waterhouse is also giving Countryman, with James McDonald to ride, a great chance of figuring in the finish following his first up second over 1200m in a BenchMark 90 at Rosehill on July 18.
“I thought he ran terrific the other day resuming and I can’ see why he won’t run a very nice race and fight out the finish tomorrow,” Waterhouse said.
Countryman currently shares favouritism at $4.20 with the John Sargent trained Centre Pivot who is having his first run since recording a hat trick of wins with a victory in a BenchMark 95 Handicap at Rosehill on February 7.
Spurtonic is Waterhouse’s final runner at Rosehill and is a $31 outsider in the Winter Challenge with Danny Beasley on top.
Waterhouse has also thrown out an extra tip for the weekend and said on RSN’s Racing Ahead this morning that stable followers should invest on Northern Meteor gelding Cabeza De Vaca who is going around in race five at Kemble Grange on Saturday, the Mater Dei Special School Maiden Plate over 1600m.
“Make sure your listeners back the horse in race five at Kembla Grange, Cabeza De Vaca. A very nice horse and he will win that race,” Waterhouse said.
